Investment in the future: BLG rents area in Bremerhaven for high & heavy factory

The rental of the MWB Area including two ship's berths enables further expansion of the BLG Group's high & heavy segment in Bremerhaven in the future.

From July 1, 2023, the seaport and logistics company BLG LOGISTICS will rent a prime site directly adjacent to the BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven. The Supervisory Board of the BLG Group recently approved the plan. The MWB Area on Barkhausenstraße 60 offers 60,000 square meters of open-air and indoor space as well as two ship's berths on a 600-meter stretch of quay.

"This investment is our response to the increased demand for handling self-propelled units, breakbulk cargo and project cargo and it will also boost our high & heavy segment in the AUTOMOBILE division", explains Matthias Magnor, an executive officer and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the BLG Group. Renting the area will allow the company to expand both its handling operations and its depth of services in the import/export of rolling construction machines, tractors and other heavy goods. With an annual handling volume of some 1.2 million tons of high & heavy goods, the BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven is already one of Europe's largest ro-ro terminals of its type. The expansion of the BLG site will also generally increase the efficiency and resilience of all the company's cargo handling segments.

BLG LOGISTICS plans to develop a high & heavy factory for technical services in Bremerhaven, scheduled for completion by 2026. The open-air and hall spaces to be rented, which include already installed cranes, are suitable for the assembly and disassembly of large plant. An important aspect apart from the planned freeport status is the seamless connection to the 240-hectare site of the auto terminal. The new area lies directly adjacent to the BLG site in the Kaiserhafen. This means that the MWB Area can in future be accessed directly from the BLG terminal. What's more, BLG will be able to deliver and collect high & heavy goods by truck to and from the MWB Area.

The site on Barkhausenstraße is owned by MWB Grundstücksverwaltungs GmbH (hence the name). Currently it is still being used for shipbuilding activities. BLG will take it over successively starting in July. Up to completion of the development - including projects such as energy-saving refurbishment of the buildings - BLG will use the area as a back-up to ease the pressure on the core area of the auto terminal.
